DE QUEEN –Denise Hammond, Director of Financial Aid at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, has announced the first group recipients of the College's Board of Visitors Scholarships for the 2003-2004 school year. The scholarships, valued at up to $1200, are good for two semesters' tuition and are conferred upon graduating high school seniors.

Erica Nicole Morphew, a 2003 graduate of De Queen High School, will attend CCCUA this fall with an eye to entering the Radiologic Technology program at UAMS/AHEC Southwest or becoming a Registered Nurse. She says, “CCCUA provides a great opportunity for many area residents. It allows a person to obtain an education while working and living at home, which is more cost-efficient. I also know it is a great education facility – my mom graduated from CCCUA, and now she is a Loan Officer at Diamond State Bank.”

Brenda Bahena, also a 2003 graduate of De Queen High School, is another Board of Visitors Scholarship recipient. She plans to pursue an Associate of Arts degree, with intentions of transferring to a four-year school later. As a single parent, she says the scholarship has helped “contribute to my dream to get an education and be something in this world.” She is off to a good start, saying, “The instructor in my Success Strategies class made me feel like I was at home.”

Inja Brown, a 2003 De Queen High School graduate and native of El Salvador, says the Board of Visitors Scholarship “gives me a great start … it lets me know that I have the ability to compete and win something in life.”

Elton Jefferson Jr., a 2003 graduate of Nashville High School, plans to seek an Associate of Applied Science in Business Management at CCCUA.

Sarah E. Allensworth, a 2003 graduate of Umpire High School, plans to use her Board of Visitors Scholarship to take basic classes before entering the LPN program.

Jay Curtis Watson, a 2003 graduate of Murfreesboro High School, intends to use his scholarship to get a Certificate of Proficiency through the College’s Collision Repair program. He cites the impression the new Collision Repair facility and instructor Bruce Davis made on him as the primary reasons for selecting CCCUA over other schools.

Hammond said, "Even at the two-year college level, with all the effort our Board makes to keep tuition affordable, there are still those students out there who wouldn't be able to walk in our door if it weren't for these scholarships. We are pleased to help these students, but always wish we could do more."

Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Higher Learning.
