DE QUEEN –Denise Hammond, Director of Financial Aid at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, has announced additional recipients of scholarships for the 2003-2004 school year.

Board of Visitors scholarships, valued at up to $1200, are good for two semesters' tuition and are conferred upon graduating high school seniors.

Dorisandra Gutierrez, a 2003 GED recipient from De Queen High School, is the first of the second group of scholars to be named. Gutierrez says that the Board of Visitors scholarship will enable her to fill “a dream that I believed it wasn’t possible after almost two years of dropping out of school.” She added, “I always wanted to go to college, and receiving this scholarship will help me become something that later on in life will make my family and me proud.” She thanked the Adult Education staff in particular for their support, “and for giving me the chance to apply for this scholarship.”

Brandon Winer, a 2003 graduate of Gillham High School, is another recipient of a Board of Visitors Scholarship. He will enter the Electrical Apprenticeship program offered by the College at its Ashdown Extension, and plans to work toward an Associate of General Technology degree.

Angela Byrum, a 1992 GED graduate of Arkansas High School, was named the recipient of this year’s Mittie and Ruel Crow Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a Sevier County resident. Byrum said “I intend to enroll in a few extra hours of classes that I need to complete in order to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher. The scholarship will enable me to achieve that goal a whole lot sooner.” She says that “When that dream does come true, I will hold everyone at CCCUA forever in my heart, and will know that all of their support, encouragement, kind words, and guidance paved the way on my awesome journey of receiving my education.”

Andrea Denson, a 2003 graduate of Dierks High School, has been named a recipient of this year’s Cossatot Good Sams scholarship. She said, “I can’t wait to attend CCCUA this fall. I am very excited – the faculty are great, and this scholarship will help me greatly to get me into and through nursing school.”

Hammond said, "We appreciate the contributions that the Board of Visitors and other organizations like the Good Sams and the Crow family have made to help outstanding high school graduates attend college close to home. We always wish we could do more, and urge the public to contact the Chancellor’s office about making one-time gifts or setting up a scholarship, either in the name of a loved one, or to promote enrollment in a particular academic or technical program."

Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Higher Learning.
