New CDA Scholarship Available Through CCCUA
30 July 2003

DE QUEEN – Robbie McKelvy, Chair of the Division of University Transfer Studies at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, has announced that the College is now eligible to accept scholarship applications for students interested in entering the Child Development Associate Training certificate program. This certificate program is designed to qualify students to work in childcare centers. CCCUA instituted an Early Childhood Education degree program in 2002 as a result of the passage of a local quarter-cent sales tax by Sevier County voters in 2001.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be currently employed at a licensed or registered child care program, and be recommended by the Director or Owner of that program. Applicants must also meet one of the three following requirements: Employment for at least the last six months in the child care program which recommends them; or completed the Child Care Orientation Training, a 20-hour CCOT course from which students receive a Certificate of Completion; or have completed the Arkansas Children’s Program Administration Orientation, an 18-hour Director’s Orientation, which also yields a Certificate of Completion.

Applications must be received by Monday, August 11, 2003 for consideration. McKelvy said, “We recommend that people get their applications in the mail no later than August 7th so they won’t miss out because they didn’t make the deadline.”

Classes will be led by Maurice Higginbotham of Ashdown, who will teach the classes from the College’s Ashdown Extension using the College’s Interactive Video classrooms. “This means that students in De Queen and Nashville will also be able to participate live in the classroom discussions,” said McKelvy.

Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Higher Learning.
