DE QUEEN – Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas has received a $25,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor, according to Chancellor Frank Adams. Money from the grant will go to the College’s Endowment Fund, which has a goal of raising $1,000,000 by the end of calendar 2005. One million dollars would fund sixty permanent scholarships to the school.
Adams described the terms of the grant, which requires the College to raise money in a dollar-for-dollar match within the next six months. At the end of that time, the donor will write a check matching the amount raised. “The donor expressly did not wish to be publicly identified,” Adams said, “and we respect that. The ball’s in our court now, so it’s up to us and our partners in the local media to let the community know that a lot of small donations, five dollars here, twenty dollars there, can add up to some very substantial dollars for the future of our students.”
Under the terms of the grant, monies raised at special events like the upcoming Fifth Annual Rummage Sale can be included in the matching total, but the challenge places emphasis on getting individual members of the community to contribute. “It’s all about building a regular donor base for the College, because that’s the surest way to make the endowment fund grow, “Adams noted. He added that the foundation will be contacting potential donors in the next few weeks.
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Higher Learning.
