Bowden said, “The state budget cuts made it necessary for us to tighten up on enrollment requirements to permit classes to go forward, so we didn’t offer as many sections or as many classes this fall as we did last fall.” The College offered 240 sections in the fall of 2003, and 204 in the fall of 2004, a decline of 15%. She added that administrators at the College are teaching more courses than formerly, “which helps us offer them in a way that doesn’t adversely impact our budget.”
Bowden went on to state that concurrent enrollment by high school students in college-level courses is up significantly this year, particularly in Howard County. Fall 2003 concurrent enrollment was 213. Fall 2004 concurrent enrollment is 271. The count of concurrent students by school district is: Ashdown, 46; Caddo Hills, 1; De Queen, 12; Dierks, 3; Horatio, 25; Kirby, 8; Lockesburg, 6; Mineral Springs, 19; Murfreesboro, 12; Nashville, 138; Saratoga, 1. Bowden said, “We are finding that, particularly in Nashville, high school students are discovering that concurrent enrollment represents a real opportunity for them to quickly advance their education.”
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification
and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De
Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has
an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher
Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
