“Workplace Spanish” Course Responds to Need
05 October 2004
DE QUEEN – The Workforce Development and Continuing
Education Department at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas
will offer “Workplace Spanish for Firefighters and EMS Personnel”
beginning October 20. The class will meet each Wednesday through November
24 from 10AM to noon in Room 8 of CCCUA’s Nashville Extension. Laura
Riddle, the College’s Spanish instructor, will teach the course. The
deadline for registering for this course is October 11. Call 800-844-4471
and ask for Continuing Education for more information.
Continuing Education Coordinator Tammy Coleman said, “If you look at
the Census 2000 data for Arkansas, the Hispanic population has grown more
than 300 percent from what it was in 1990. There is a lot of need for our
firefighters and EMS personnel to be able to communicate effectively, because
they are always working with people in high-stress, life-or-death situations,
and communicating effectively is crucial to their success.”
Coleman added that the “Workplace Spanish” course content can
be adapted to other professions as well, including legal, medical and retail.
She stated that there was no prior Spanish experience necessary, and that
the cost of the course is $77 plus a book and instruction CD, which cost $46.16.
Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s
degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension
sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of
more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission
of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
