CCCUA Seeks CAMP Grant Participants
20 October 2004

DE QUEEN – Eduardo Mendoza, Director of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, has announced that participants are being sought to receive grants toward preparing for and financing a portion of their college education. This is a new grant program at CCCUA, one of only three new programs in the U.S. this year, and the only one in Arkansas.

CAMP is a federally-funded program designed to provide students of migrant families an opportunity to attend college. CCCUA’s program recruits students from Arkansas, and provides various services to assist them in successfully completing their first year of college.

Prospective students are eligible for CAMP if they meet one of the following criteria: they, their parent or guardian have engaged in migrant or seasonal farm work for at least 75 days within the last 24 months; have been eligible for the Title 1-C Migrant K-12 Education Program, or; have qualified for the Workforce Investment Act 167 Program (WIA 167), formerly the JTPA 402 Program. Applicants must also be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Resident, have a high school diploma or GED, and meet minimum requirements for admission to Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas.

Mendoza noted that CAMP provides numerous services to prospective students, including Academic and Scholarship Advising, Scholarships, Tutoring, Counseling, Career Planning, Health Services, Cultural Experiences, and support services to satisfy each participant’s educational and personal needs.

He added that the program has some specific definitions of which prospective applicants should be aware: “A Migrant Farm Worker is a seasonal farm worker whose employment required travel which kept them from returning to a permanent home within the same day. A Seasonal Farm Worker is a person who was employed in farm work on a temporary or seasonal, not a year-round, basis. The federal definition of work for this program can include any activity directly related to the production of crops, dairy products, poultry, livestock, the cultivation or harvesting of trees, or any activity directly related to fish farms, packaging or canning of agricultural products. This includes work performed for wages or personal subsistence.

Mendoza concluded by stating that CAMP is currently enrolling students for the spring, 2005 term at CCCUA. There are 30 openings in the program that can be filled by persons from the community or current CCCUA students. Eligible students will receive a $1,500 CAMP Scholarship and a $170.00 monthly stipend. For more information, contact Karina Gonzalez or Eduardo Mendoza at (800) 844 4471 or (870) 584-4471.

Cossatot Community College offers both technical certification and Associate’s degrees in a wide range of fields on its campus at De Queen, at extension sites at Nashville and Ashdown, and at cccua.edu. It has an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
