UA Cossatot FFA Receives $3,000 Grant for Growing
April 11, 2017
UA Cossatot Collegiate FFA chapter was selected to receive a Tractor Supply Company and the National FFA Foundation Grant for Growing in the amount of $3,000.
UA Cossatot agriculture instructor and FFA sponsor Kelli Harris stated, “We are so thankful for this grant and all of the support provided to us by Tractor Supply Company. We have forged a strong relationship with our local store, and the manager, Linda Shomo, has worked diligently with us over the past several years to help with many activities and projects.”
Between Jan. 10 and Feb. 13, the National FFA Foundation received over 800 applications from FFA chapters across the country detailing how they will start or expand a unique and sustainable project. For UA Cossatot FFA, this project is the greenhouse located on the De Queen campus.
The greenhouse serves as both a classroom and a community service project. As a classroom, it provides agriculture students with hands-on experience and practical skills related to horticulture. As a community service project, it allows students to interact with the community, acquire customer service skills, and practice sharing the knowledge they have gained from horticulture class.
“The greenhouse has been an excellent way to get our community more involved in our agriculture program. We enjoy meeting all of the people that come in during our spring plant sale,” Harris stated.
Proceeds from greenhouse plant sales benefit the UA Cossatot Collegiate FFA chapter, and raises about $8,000 - $10,000 yearly to fund scholarships and learning opportunities.
The Grant for Growing monies will fund updates to the greenhouse, such as adding a watering system, improving the cooling system, replacing the plastic cover, and adding tables to increase workspace.
